The Steinhatchee River lined with marinas and docks

Greetings from

Steinhatchee

Season over

The Short Answer

Steinhatchee is the busiest scallop town on the Big Bend. Boats launch at the Taylor County ramp on 1st Avenue South, the Jena ramp across the river, or the river marinas, then run out the marked channel and turn north or south for several miles to the grass. Favorite spots run from Big Grassy Island about 6 miles north to the Pepperfish Keys about 6 to 7 miles south.

Local Know-How

  1. Opening weekend is a crowd. In past seasons about 1,500 boats have left the river on opening day, with ramps and marinas overflowing. Get to the public ramp before 8 a.m. on weekends, or go mid week.
  2. After heavy rain the river pushes dark, tannic water out over the nearby flats. Steer clear of the river plume and keep running until the water turns green and clear before you look for grass.
  3. The Steinhatchee channel is well marked but narrow, and outside the markers it can be only inches deep at low tide. Stay between the markers, especially near the river mouth.
  4. Early in the season many boats head north toward Big Grassy Island and Keaton Beach. Later in the summer the flats south near Rocky Creek and the Pepperfish Keys can produce. Big clusters of boats usually mark good grass, but watch for snorkelers away from their boats.
  5. This zone has a lower bag limit from June 15 to 30 (1 gallon whole or 1 cup shucked per person, 5 gallons whole per boat), then the regular limit runs to Labor Day. Sea Hag Marina has a cleaning area and can often find someone to clean your catch for a small fee.

Getting Them Cleaned

  • Freelance scallop cleaners work at Steinhatchee marinas in peak season. Ask at the marina office who is cleaning.
  • Look for handwritten roadside signs for scallop cleaning around town in season.
  • Get back early. Cleaning lines grow long in the afternoon on busy weekends.
  • Bring cash and agree on the price before you hand over your catch.
  • Many scallop charters here don't include cleaning. Ask before you book.

Sea Hag Marina Scallop Cleaning is listed under Where to Launch.
