A dock and stilt house on the water at Horseshoe Beach

The Short Answer

Horseshoe Beach is a small Dixie County fishing village with a free two lane county ramp at Butler-Douglas Memorial Park and a second public ramp in town. The park is a good start for the scallop shallows, and you can reach the flats toward the Pepperfish Keys to the north from here or from Steinhatchee. It is usually quieter than Steinhatchee, but the coast is very shallow, so know the tides before you launch.

Local Know-How

  1. Horseshoe Beach is usually quieter than Steinhatchee or Keaton Beach, but its ramps have limited parking and get busy in scallop season and on holiday weekends. Arrive early.
  2. How far you run depends on the year. In some seasons boats have had to go north past the Pepperfish Keys, while in clear water years scallops turned up about halfway there. Scallop numbers on this coast swing a lot from year to year.
  3. The coast here is very shallow. Know the tides and your water depth before you launch.
  4. The campground at Butler-Douglas Memorial Park is still being rebuilt. Restrooms are very limited and there are no showers yet, so plan accordingly.
  5. All state waters in Dixie County are in the Fenholloway to Suwannee zone, open June 15 through Labor Day with a lower bag limit from June 15 to 30.

Getting Them Cleaned

  • No scallop cleaning service could be confirmed in Horseshoe Beach. Most scallopers clean their own catch on the boat.
  • Steinhatchee is the closest town with freelance scallop cleaners in season.
