A causeway road through salt marsh and small islands on the Nature Coast

Greetings from

Ozello

Season over

The Short Answer

Ozello is a small community on St. Martins Marsh, between the Crystal River and Homosassa River mouths, where most Citrus scallopers work the grass flats. Both scallop areas are about a 15 minute ride away. Boaters launch at two free county ramps or at Ozello Keys Marina and Ms. Fin's Oarhouse Marina, where local scallop charters depart. If you are new here, watch for rocks.

Local Know-How

  1. Ozello sits between the two main Citrus scallop areas. It is about a 15 minute ride from Ozello Keys Marina to either the Crystal River or Homosassa grounds, and most scallopers work the waters between the two rivers.
  2. The two county ramps are different. The John Brown Drive ramp at Ozello Park is a sand ramp with no dock, suited to airboats and johnboats. The ramp at Ozello Community Park on Pirate Point, also called Pirates Cove Boat Ramp, is a single lane with a portable toilet, and both are free.
  3. Citrus County bought the neighboring Pirates Cove property in 2026 and is merging it into Ozello Community Park under a new name, so signs and names at that ramp may change.
  4. A year round 25 mph manatee zone covers the coastal waters among the Citrus islands, out to about 1,000 feet off the outer islands, so the run out from Ozello is not a full throttle ride.
  5. Watch for rocks in these waters. If you are new to the area, a charter saves you the risk of damaging your boat on rocks while you learn it. At Ozello Keys Marina, dock crews clean scallops for an average of about $6 per gallon.

Getting Them Cleaned

  • Ask the staff at Ozello Keys Marina about cleaning crews working the docks in season.
  • The marina's fish cleaning tables are self-serve, not a cleaning service.

Ozello Keys Marina Cleaning Crews is listed under Where to Launch.

Drive times: about 1 hour 45 minutes from Tampa, about 1 hour 45 minutes from Gainesville, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Orlando.
