The Withlacoochee River mouth and the Gulf from the end of the road at Yankeetown

Greetings from

Yankeetown & Inglis

Season over

The Short Answer

Yankeetown and Inglis boaters launch on the lower Withlacoochee River, and the easiest Gulf access is the free Levy County ramp at the end of SR 40. A local charter runs half day scallop trips on grass flats near Yankeetown in about 3 to 6 feet of water, but scallops here are less reliable than to the south, where the main grounds lie between the Crystal River and Homosassa River mouths.

Local Know-How

  1. Expect patchy scalloping. Bay scallops don't usually show up off Yankeetown because the river water is not as clear or salty as they like, so check recent reports before you plan a trip around them.
  2. For the Gulf, use the free Levy County ramp at the end of SR 40 (Bird Creek). It has two lanes and parking for about 20 trailers.
  3. The Dewey Allen Park ramp sits on Vassey Creek, a shallow tidal creek, so plan around the tide if you use it.
  4. Yankeetown waters follow the July 1 to Sept. 24 Levy, Citrus and Hernando season, with a limit of 2 gallons whole scallops per person and 10 gallons per boat.

Getting Them Cleaned

  • No scallop cleaning business was found in Yankeetown or Inglis. Ask your charter or marina about a local cleaning crew.
  • Crystal River, a short drive south on US 19, has dock cleaners in season.

Drive times: about 1 hour 15 minutes from Gainesville, about 2 hours from Tampa, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Orlando.
