Boats on the Gulf off Hudson Beach at sunset

Greetings from

Hudson

Closed early

The Short Answer

Hudson is the north end of the Pasco zone, which has the shortest season on the coast and closed early for algae in 2026. Most trailer boaters launch at the Pasco County ramp at Robert J. Strickland Memorial Park (Hudson Beach) on Clark Street, where several scallop charters also pick up. The best grass is usually 1 to 5 miles out in 4 to 8 feet of water, a 30 to 45 minute ride.

Local Know-How

  1. The Strickland ramp is one lane with 46 trailer spaces. Parking is $10 per 24 hours, paid by card or phone only (no cash). A Pasco annual pass is $75 for residents or $100 for non-residents and covers only Strickland and Anclote River Park.
  2. Pasco has the shortest season on the coast, scheduled for July 10 to Aug 18 in 2026, and algae has cut it short three years running. In 2024 FWC closed the zone July 24 and reopened it Aug 28 to Sept 24; in 2025 it closed Aug 6 and reopened Sept 6 to 21; in 2026 it closed Aug 6 for Pyrodinium bahamense toxin and did not reopen before the season ended. Check FWC's bay scallop updates the morning you go.
  3. From Skeleton Key Marina next to Hudson Beach, plan on about a five minute idle out to the main channel before you can get on plane.
  4. The best scalloping is usually 1 to 5 miles from shore in 4 to 8 feet of water, about a 30 to 45 minute boat ride. Scallops are often easiest to find where sand or mud meets the edge of the grass.
  5. After a toxin closure reopens, eat only the scallop muscle, not the roe or the whole scallop. Saxitoxin cannot be cooked out and has no taste or smell.

Getting Them Cleaned

  • No paid scallop cleaning service was found in Hudson. Plan to shuck your own, or book a charter that cleans.
  • At least one Hudson scallop charter says it doesn't clean scallops, so ask before you book.

Drive times: about 1 hour from Tampa, about 2 hours 15 minutes from Orlando, about 2 hours 30 minutes from Gainesville.
