The Carrabelle River waterfront and its docks

Greetings from

Carrabelle

Season over

The Short Answer

Carrabelle and nearby Lanark are in the open Franklin to northwest Taylor zone, which ran July 1 to Sept. 24 in 2026. Boats launch from the city ramps on the Carrabelle River, next to C-Quarters Marina for fuel, bait and ice. Keep your expectations modest: this stretch is not one of Florida's main scallop grounds, and few local charters run scallop trips.

Local Know-How

  1. Expect patchier scallops than on the big grounds. Florida's three main scallop grounds are St. Joseph Bay, Dixie and Taylor, and Citrus County, and Carrabelle is in none of them.
  2. St. George Sound, off Carrabelle, is one of the bays where FWC researchers placed caged wild and hatchery scallops to boost spawning, as part of a 10-year Panhandle restoration project.
  3. The Marine Street and 4th Street city ramps charge $10 per launch, paid in an envelope at the drop box, and Carrabelle police enforce it. Franklin County residents and property owners can get an annual pass at City Hall for a $3 processing fee, and non-residents pay $120 plus $3. The Timber Island ramp should be free, but confirm when you arrive.
  4. Lanark Village, just east, is also in the zone, but it has no public ramp of its own, so plan to launch in Carrabelle.

Getting Them Cleaned

  • No paid scallop cleaning service was found in Carrabelle or Lanark. Plan to clean your own catch.
  • C-Quarters Marina has a self-serve fish cleaning house.

Drive times: about 1 hour 15 minutes from Tallahassee, about 2 hours from Panama City.
